The Energy NR is a new shoe in Newton's line, that also represents a bit of a new direction. Functionally it is quite similar, but achieved differently from the designs of the Motion and Gravity, that featured the rubbery Hytrel action/reaction technology.
The NR is the first of the training shoes to utilize the low profile 5 lug design, first seen in the MV2 racing shoe, which compresses into a foam filled chamber to achieve its action/reaction cushioning. Much softer than the originals, it has 6 millimeter geometry and a broader base, especially under the midfoot so adds stability without a second density. The upper has the same saddle design familiar to other Newton models, with soft synthetic suede coaxing the foot through the gait while providing the smooth interior. Rubber under the midfoot adds a bit of torsional stability and durability without intruding on the ride. Overall the Energy is a well built trainer that can handle your high mileage training, as soon as you adjust to its lowered feel.
