The 700 has been New Balance entry level cross country offering, now known as the XC 7, and the gap between top and bottom has narrowed. The upper is a closed mesh with an all-over fused support pattern for structure and durability. The snug fit conforms well to most feet because of its curved shape.
The midsole is a thin layer of EVA, enough for cushion on hard surfaces, without slowing down on the soft stuff. The outersole is a thin layer of solid rubber with low profile arrowhead-shaped lugs over at surface, the spiked version adding six spikes to the forefoot for effective grip. The reasonable price makes the total package very appealing, but performance is the key, and the XC 7 is a performer.
