The Charge RC introduced a new upper construction and midsole to Under Armour’s running line, and now its sibling, the Charge RC II Racer, does the same for competition. The upper has two parts: a supportive, closed mesh in the split rearfoot that locks down the foot, and a stretchy forefoot of closed mesh with no-sew overlays that moves with the foot.
It’s completed by a well-padded tongue that rounds out a monosock construction and works well because of the split upper design. The midsole is a low-profile CM-EVA that’s responsive, and the geometry maintains effective contact with the ground to take advantage of racing biomechanics. The outersole is thin but effective for traction, though best suited for the road. The result is a surprisingly nimble and supportive road racer that cushions well, has a snappy feel, and doesn’t get in the way.
