The Speed Evo R follows on the heels of the first round of successful spikes from Hoka, with innovation from road racing, the laboratory, and some creative thinking where the two experiences intersect. The upper is closed mesh, with no-sew overlays at the heel, toe, and eyestay, along with the prominent logo, the support of the foot coming largely from the minimal stretch of the fabric.
The midsole is a pretty beefy layer of EVA, like a road racing shoe, not overly thick, but light like Hoka shoes have proven to be. The thinking is for protection, in longer races as well as faster races. The spike plate is a little different for each foot, both oriented to the left turn nature of the track, the lever of the right foot being longer than the left, so each can respond to the radius of the turn and its forces effectively. Both have 4 removable spikes, and aggressively shaped teeth to grip and then release from the track, for outstanding traction. The combination of design, ingenuity, and execution earned the Speed Evo R our award for Best Distance Spike.
