Much lighter than Mizuno racing shoes seen in the U.S. over the last decade, the Universe arrives at its ultra-light weight without completely sacrificing protection. Each component is reduced to just what’s required. The upper is thin mesh with plastic reinforcing on both sides of the eyestays. Instead of a traditional tongue, the instep is a split in the upper, saving weight without compromising fit. The mid- sole is so thin and flexible that the sensation the foot feels while running helps the runner to land more efficiently. As your race distance increases, however, so does the likelihood of breakdown—of your foot’s motion, efficiency, and the midsole. We think the reduced range is a fair tradeoff for its super high-performance. Save this one for your most important races; the Universe is serious equipment.
