Altra Lone Peak 8

The Lone Peak is one of Altra’s original trail running models, going back to the mists of time. Well, not quite that far back, but any shoe that makes it to 8 iterations is clearly doing something right, left, right. Starting with the upper, version eight features a tough ripstop fabric, ghillie lacing, gaiter accommodation, tongue and heel pull tabs to ease the entry, and Altra’s roomy forefoot fit. The midsole has decent cushioning, though quite low profile, best suited to softer trails not because of materials, but more for the geometry and demands on your running frame – the fitter you are the less shoe you need. One bonus is Altra’s Stone Guard, vertically between your forefoot and the outersole, and by extension the rocks. The outersole is toothy, with chevrons facing each other in high traction rows of durable carbon rubber, an effective toecap and forgiving kick-fin complete the trail equipment, designed to keep you upright. The verdict boils down to this: there’s a lot to like with the performance of the Lone Peak 8, and even more to appreciate with its ability to go the distance.

Testers: “Fit great, trails were made for these and vice-versa.”
