The Explorer expanded ASICS’ reach into the technological approach to running cushioning and comfort. The slotted grooves in the single density midsole allowed the shoe to flex better, and also allowed the foam to compress towards the the adjacent grooves for improved cushioning. The quality of the foam was a step up from the 60’s and 70’s as well, and improved from the foamed rubber of the earlier decades with a more consistent cell size thanks to better EVA formulations. The full length carbon outersole was durable and effective for traction.
