The Speedstar has filled a role for beefy racer/lightweight trainer, which has been consistently effective. Version 5 has taken steps to surpass its predecessors. The midsole and outersole remain much the same as previous rounds – thanks to a nice combination of responsive cushioning and great flexibility, hallmarks of a minimalist shoe. The significant change here is the upper – a breathable mesh with a matrix of black urethane, in small hexagonal shapes, which varies in thickness to provide support or flexibility. The looks – bright base with striking black get extra credit, but primarily from the performance.
