The Roc 285 is a bit of a conglomeration of Inov8’s success stories. The look is familiar, but the mash-up also has a few new twists to add to the performance. The upper is the same open mesh used in the X-Talon 195, breathable and close fitting, but a new toe bumper adds a bit more protection, and overlays on the heel do the same. The welded overlays across the saddle are much tougher than expected, cinching the foot while also shielding the midfoot from bumps. The midsole is Inov8’s three chevron, medium cushioned EVA, designed to manage harder trails as well as some running on the roads. The outersole is a tough carbon rubber with moderate lugs for excellent grip on trails, even if they are paved. The overall effect is a well equipped shoe for mid-range trail races, or longer.
