Spenser Brogue

LordSpenserBrogue

This is a shoe, belonging to a sportsman by the name Spencer, and was used for track running from the 1860’s (ish). Featuring three spikes up front, with one in the heel for traction. The shoe was used for running on cinder paths and tracks, possibly grass tracks, and likely for Cross Country races, Hares and Hounds (a kind of Team Tag), or Paper Chasing (also a team running event where slips of paper were spread over an area and retrieved by the contestants to tally a winning team). Otherwise, it was constructed like a modern dress shoe. Not exactly what we’d expect in a full featured, modern running shoe, but it wasn’t so far away from the all leather running shoes of the late 1800’s up to the 1940s or early 1950s (watch the film Chariots of Fire for a little context). We have come a long way in the last couple of centuries, and perhaps our descendants may find our current shoe tech to be equally quaint by comparison to their footwear choices.
