On has a way with running shoes, and their innovation continues to move forward. The Cloudflyer 5 advances the Cloudflyer franchise with some updated features, but as is usually the case with the brand, nothing too radically different. In that vein, version five takes aim at geometry, by taking a bit of the angle out of the rearfoot midsole, for a bit flatter and more stable touchdown. The two-density midsole continues, providing good stability, and the Cloudtec design provides both the cushioning as well as the stable geometry the shoe has been known for. The outersole is heavily textured rubber providing a good combination of traction and durability. The upper is closed mesh, with an abbreviated saddle/rearfoot support connecting to the lace throat, delivering a touch of structure and a comfortable ankle/heel fit. The smooth interior completes the package, with a breathable mesh and a well cushioned polyurethane innersole pampering the foot. Whether a fan of the franchise or a newcomer – to either the brand or the shoe, as a stable high mileage option, the Cloudflyer 5 will handle your marathon training or casual wear with equal effectiveness.
Testers: “Firm, but protective ride. Secure and supportive fit; snug but accommodating. Definitely a frequent choice from my quiver of shoes.”
