Salming is a brand from Sweden which is not well known outside of Europe. The R21 is their lightest shoe, designed with racing in mind; whether that is on the road, cross country, or Orienteering (the Swedes are big on their map and compass racing). In England they have a following for their rugged sport, Fell running, an obscure cross country run in the mountains. The upper is a closed mesh with welded overlays and synthetic suede. The midsole is a firm, thin layer of EVA, for minimal protection. The outersole is toughened rubber, which covers the surface well, offers good traction, to keep you quick without carrying extra weight. If your aim is a reliable, lightweight racer, you’ll find it in the R21.
