Scarpa is a great name for a shoe brand because it is directly to the point; scarpa is the Italian word for “shoe.” The Spin Planet is a new trail running shoe to the Scarpa line, and it is very well done. The upper is a breathable, tight weave of synthetic textile, with thermo-formed overlays and an asymmetrical tongue to merge the shoe and foot into a trail taming unit. Utilizing recycled materials in the midsole, and sole (about 35-40% by Scarpa’s estimate), the upper is 100% recycled, making for a compelling renewable footwear story. While the performance is key, the reuse of materials shows what can be done without sacrificing performance. The midsole is a bouncy polymer foam that is protective and responsive, and the Presa outersole (“grip” in Italian) performs like its name, even in moist conditions. Appropriately, the Spin Planet is a step in the right direction – running performance with a conscience.
